Real vs. Faux Florals: What Belongs on Your Front Porch?
You know that feeling when you drive by someone’s house and their front porch just gets it right? It’s welcoming, it's seasonal, and somehow it looks fresh even when the weather's doing its best to make that difficult. The not-so-secret secret? It's all in the florals.
One of the biggest questions we hear this time of year is:
“Should I use real or faux florals on my porch?”
The answer? It depends—but we’re breaking it down so you can decide what works best for your space and your lifestyle.
🌼 Use Real Florals When...
You love the joy of tending to your plants.
If you enjoy watering, pruning, and watching blooms change throughout the season, real flowers can be such a rewarding choice. They add color, fragrance, and movement that you just can’t fake.
You have a covered or protected porch.
Sun and wind can be brutal, especially on delicate petals. If your porch gets some shade or shelter, real florals will hold up much longer—and look their best longer, too.
You’re creating a short-term display.
Think bridal showers, holidays, or weekend gatherings. Real blooms can make a gorgeous, impactful statement when you don’t need them to last forever.
Lexi’s tip: “I always add a couple of real potted plants around the steps when I’m expecting guests—it’s my way of saying ‘You’re welcome here,’ before they even knock.”
🌸 Go Faux When...
You want something low-maintenance.
Faux florals have come a long way. The good ones can fool even the sharpest eyes from a distance, and you don’t have to worry about sun, wind, or forgetting to water (🙋 guilty).
Your porch gets full sun or wild weather.
South-facing porch? Crazy wind? Faux is your friend. Just make sure they’re outdoor-rated so they don’t fade faster than your morning coffee cools down.
You’re layering with other textures.
One of our favorite tricks? Use faux florals as a base, then tuck in a few fresh clippings from the yard to add dimension and a hint of real-life charm.
Tabitha’s tip: “I love starting with faux and adding a sprig of fresh rosemary and lavender from the garden or fallen branches from the trees—it smells amazing and adds that imperfectly-perfect touch.”
The Secret Is in the Mix
Here’s the thing: You don’t have to choose one or the other. Some of the most beautifully styled porches use a thoughtful combination of both real and faux elements. The trick is knowing when and where to place them—and that’s exactly what we’re teaching in our upcoming Front Door Workshop.
